How the Presence of Game Patterns Affects Games

Abstract

Game patterns represent fundamental components of video game design that influence player behavior, engagement, progression, and long-term retention. While these mechanics are often implemented to improve player satisfaction and motivation, certain implementations may evolve into dark patterns that create psychological pressure or encourage excessive engagement. This article examines selected game patterns commonly found in modern live-service games and analyzes their influence on player experience. Through a comparative analysis of two games with similar progression and monetization structures, the study explores how different implementations of mechanics such as stamina systems, character presentation, animations, and exploration mechanics affect player satisfaction and behavior. The findings demonstrate that the design and implementation of game patterns significantly impact player perception, highlighting the importance of balancing engagement-focused mechanics with player-friendly design principles.
